Last year, sorely needed renovations were finally carried out and the entire first floor was transformed into a more modem and tidy facility. A new nautilus center opened last May in space once used as a chapel. Plans to renovate the men%u2019s Health and Fitness Center are currently in progress. But along with the increased attendanceYWCA Opens DoorsThe Brooklyn YWCA is having a free open house on September 13, featuring aerobics and gymnastics demonstrations, a bake sale, a beauty workshop, a slide show of art exhibit and tours of the newly renovated building.Visitors to the open house may register for one free activity during the week of September 14, including a swim, aerobics, yoga, dance or karate class. The YWCA is at Atlantic and Third Avenues. For information, call 797-2726.at local health clubs, the Y is seeing its own rejuvenation as membership has boomed. Physical Director Steve Aswald says it is the family atmosphere and relaxed environment that pulls the people in. With the new equipment and comparatively low rates for health facilities, the institution continues to stand its ground. For adults, a variety of L.I.F.E. programs offered at the Y provide classes geared toward the health of adults. The courses range from starter fitness to an early bird aerobics workout to a Healthy Back class. The Y also offers social programs where adults can learn calligraphy, parenting issues and a review in the performing arts.It is all these changes that led to the dramatic increase in membership at the YMCA this year, according to Dawn Macmutt in the Y%u2019s public relations department. Last year at this time membership stood at just over 1,000 and has since climbed to nearly 3,000. %u201cThe renovations and the new nautilus facilities make a big difference,%u201dBob Manza works out regularly at theYM C A on 9th St. The facility recently com %u00adpleted a major renovation. (Phoenix/KirkPhoto)The idea o f having an Olympiccontender use the pool is notunrealistic, since several starsstarted their careers at the Y.she says. In addition the Y is actively seeking to address the needs of the surrounding community and has conducted surveys to determine what classes are of interest to the public. As a result of that, the calligraphy course and a mediation course were added to the Y%u2019s listings.%u201cOur goal is two things right now, to expand our offerings so people can have what they want and to attract people from the neighborhood,%u201d she says. For information about the YMCA, 9th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, call 768-7100.
