European VacationSpells Adventure ForThree Slope StudentsThe required grade school essay %u201cWhat I Did On My Summer Vacation%u201d strikes fear in the heart of many a seventh grader. Volumes have been written about trips to the Bronx Zoo, or a family trip to Grand Canyon, or Disneyland. But a group of students in Park Slope will be able to fill reams of paper describing their adventures during six weeks in Europe. The students are part of the Model Media Programme at I.S. 88 m Park Slope and left for Europe shortly after the Statue of lib erty festivities on our shores. Zoe Hudson, Kathy Lando and Amy Sandgrund got an insider%u2019s taste of European lifestyles by travelling with some of the teachers from the program who live in Europe. The itinerary included a week%u2019s stop in London, England where they toured with teacher Elizabeth LaFarge; a stint in Paris with teacher Manuel Aries; and a week with Torill Glimsdal who showed them Norway. I.S. 88 teacher George Egholm arranged the trip for the students who will enter the eighth grade in September. Model Media draws teachers from all over the world to help students with communications skills, awareness, and by generally broadening their horizons.During this European trip the students visited schools with the teacher as well as communication facilities and participated in the Tall Ships Extravaganza on European shores. In addition, Zoe Hudson helped set up a photo exhibit in Colmar, France as part of that nation%u2019s celebration of the Statue of Liberty. %u2014 T.G.BY ZOE HUDSONOnce upon a time, in a country far, far north there was a ship. She was an old wooden Norwegian tall ship with a young spirit and her name was painted on her side %u2014Christian Ftadich.I boarded this ship in the little port of Larvik to sail to Oslo. All of the students who had been on this ship for the past year were going home, but my adventure aboard had just begun. We lifted anchor on the second of August at midnight and we were on our way. Below deck I sat swaying with the waves and I began to pale a little. If I was going to be seasick this was no time to start. Fortunately a girl on the ship had a remedy. %u201cJust think that you%u2019re going to have to clean it up, then you%u2019ll be fine,%u201d she suggested. It worked.Phoenix Fall Education SpecialOutside a strong wind blew and black surrounded us. Students and crew members were all over the ship doing their jobs, and up by the steering wheel the captain stood carefully watching everything. It all seemed as if part of a dream that I could be sailing on the same ship that represented Norway in the Statue of Liberty festivities. It was like a family aboard this ship; a caring one that had generously allowed me and two friends to get a taste of their life.As the night passed I felt the romance of the fjords. This was how the Vikings must have felt: Alone with the sea, slowly breaking through the water and headed home. The next morning the full sails were out and everyone was anxiously waiting to see Oslo. As we came into the port on one side of us was the old castle of the King on top of the hill, and then there were the docks filled with parents, relatives and reporters. They were home at last, and a big cheer went up.This was only one of my adventures in Europe this summer, and I did get to many different countries and meet many interesting people.Three Slope teens got a taste of the high seas, sailing on the Christian Radich from Norway.
