                                    Phoenix Fall Education SpecialLast w eek, 360 youngsters wrapped up an eight-week session of the Youth SkillsDiscovery and Development Project at Pratt Institute. The program culm inated in a fourday display of exhibitions and perform ances which showcased the youngsters%u2019 talents inart, photography, dance, voice, drama and music. Now in its thirteenth year, the YouthSkills Project initiated tw o new com ponents this summer, funded by the Altman Foundation. %u201c Project Display\sive, indidivualized programming in their dem onstrated areas of artistic ability in fine,creative or visual arts. The %u201c Heritage Symphony Program%u201d offered instruction on the violin,the viola or the violin cello to 50 youngsters who demonstrated musical aptitude.Learn Self DefenseBrooklyn Women%u2019s Martial Arts offers a four-week self-defense course starting September 20 to teach physical techniques that can be used in violent confrontations, as well as safety strategies, role plays and discussions.%u25a1asses will be held Saturday afternoons, 1:30-3:30pm at 421 Fifth Avenue. There is a %u2022 sliding fee, based on income, of $5-$60. It is an eightweek physical conditioning program.The course consists of training in special breathing exercises, swimming and judo/karate. Each session will consist of a 90-minute lesson by Mary Sue Ballou and Kent Baker.Two dances will be taught for three sessions at a time. The dances to be taught, in order of instruction are: Fox Trot, Cha-Cha, Waltz, Swing, Quickstep, Rumba, Tango, Samba, Viennese Waltz and Mambo. The school is at 23 Sidney Place.Packer Gets MoneyDuring this past summer, The Packer Collegiate Institute received a $35,000 grant from the E.E. Ford Foundation of Princeton, N.J., to complete the renovation of its physics laboratory, announced Peter T. Esty, Headmaster.Funding wiii provide for five completely equipped lab centers, each of which will accommodate four students. Packer has had a longtime tradition of excellence in science and, in recent years, there has been great interest in pursuing physics, particularly Advanced Placement Physics, a college level course.In 1978, Packer received $25,000 from the E.E.
