Augustine%u2019s Church are now being finalized by the Park Slope Civic Council. The details were discussed at a Sept. 8 meeting called by the council to recruit volunteers to help with the operation. The shelter, which will be operated in conjunction with the Partnership for the Homeless, an interfaith organization supported by the city%u2019s major religious denominations, is being opened at a time when attempts are being made by other Slope residents to close a 70-bed shelter operated by the City%u2019s Human Resources Administration at the 14th Street Armory. Local support for the new shelter, however, appears to be high after the volunteer information meeting last week at the church.%u201c This is a small, church-based shelter and it will be staffed by community volunteers,%u201d Jim Ryan, president of the civic council, told the 30 people who attended. Ryan had publicly committed the organization to working on the homeless problem this year. %u201c The homeless individuals will be brought to the shelter at night and picked up in the morning and returned to the city. There is no chance for dispursement into the neighborhood,%u201d he said.According to Ryan, the individuals are screened at the Partnership in Manhattan before they are driven to the overnight shelter. The concept of small church-based shelters run by community volunteers that are only open at night is more appealing to neighborhood residents because the homeless people are not left in the community during the day to loiter, say Partnership officials.%u201c It is not a situation where there will be people hanging around the outside,%u201d said Pat Burton-Eadie, of the Partnership for the Homeless at the volunteer meeting. %u201c A bus will drop them at the shelter at about 9:00pm and will pick them all up again in the morning.%u201dBurton-Eadie spoke before the group thatwas meeting in the church room that will be used for the %u201c guests%u201d . With over 60 volunteers, the council and the church hope to run the shelter five nights a week, Wednesday through Sunday.%u201c We can discuss the homeless issue ad nauseum and people in Park Slope have done just that,%u201d said Ryan welcoming the potential volunteers. %u201c We are not here to critique the Mayor, HRA or the Reagan administration, but to get our own shelter open and learn about the problem.%u201dThe homeless individuals who sleep at the St. Augustine shelter will be assigned from the Partnership%u2019s center headquarters at the Moravian Church in Manhattan, says Burton-Eadie. %u201c They will just come to this shelter for a night%u2019s deep. The volunteers will make some coffee and set out snacks and just wait for the guests to arrive,%u201d she says. %u201c The guests talk about the same things as everyone else when they get together. Once you start working with these people, you will look at the homeless people in a different way.%u201dBurton-Eadie says that while some homeless people are mentally ill, many are just people have no apartments. Two volunteers are needed nightly to spend the entire night with the %u201c guests%u201d .%u201c Usually the first night you may be nervous and won%u2019t sleep too well,%u201d said BurtonEadie, %u201c but, after that you%u2019ll get a good night%u2019s sleep Try it for the first time and you%u2019ll know what it is like.%u201dMost of the people attending the meeting appeared to want to do just that. Nearly all left their names and requested one or two days each month for shelter duty. %u201c It is something I have wanted to do,%u201d said Ruth Montgomery, %u201c but I have never known where to go to get involved.%u201dRyan asks that anyone who wants to volunteer at the shelter call Erica Brown at 638-5031.Move In For The K illGet set up to put away your opponent with racquetball shoes from Etonic.
