Charles Rangel and NYC Schools Chancellor Nathan Quinones, used the steps of the Brooklyn library as a podium for their own attack against crack. Dubbed the %u201c Brooklyn Crackdown on Crack%u201d rally, the group called on Brooklyn residents to launch their own personal war against the every-spreading use of the dangerous drug and rallied an already frustrated audience to condemn the abuse of crack.Ironically, as the Reagans prepared the outline of the goals and achievements of the Federal government in respect to drug control, the politicians at the Brooklyn rally %u2014 as many New York politicians have recently done %u2014 severely criticized the Reagan administration for failing to do enough itself to control drug trafficking across the U.S. borders and not working more effectively to prevent large drug exporting companies from using the United States as a major market. In a similar train of thought, however, there were also citizens in the audience at the rally who expressed equal frustration that this recent political involvement in the Brooklyn crack problem was no more than %u201c political maneuvering,%u201d as one person said, %u201c with no substance other than eyeing the November elections.%u201dThe turnout of some 350 people on this sunny Sunday was far smaller than the organizers said they expected but the borough was well represented with residents attending ranging from Canarsie and Bush wick as well as from the Downtown neighborhoods. Many came with their homemade placards as well as buttons and t-shirts warning against the drug. The call for action was loud and persistent from the small crowd which intermittently broke into chants of %u201c I hate crack%u201d and brandished posters demanding stricter penalties for drug pushers. Representatives from the Boy Scouts spoke and urged youngsters to join the Scouts rather than join the ranks of crack users, and volunteers from the Phoenix House mingled in the crowd verbalizing their case against drug abuse and distributed literature. The demonstration, sponsored by Golden%u2019s recently-organized Brooklyn Task Force Against Crack, a broad-based coalition of law enforcers, clergy and community leaders, brought out local politicians including Assemblyman Roger Green and City Councilmember Steve DiBrienza as well as representatives from Brooklyn%u2019s community boards and school districts. Rangel called on the Federal government to take a stronger stance against drug trafficking.%u201c We are facing the greatest challenge of our life,%u201d Golden told the largely responsive audience who shouted, shook their signs and clutched blue balloons stenciled with theContinued on Page 7Brooklyn HeightsAntiques & Collectibles mS A L EFri.
