Detective Martin Rodini from Patrol Borough Brooklyn South was strumming his guitar behind the sound-proof glass, putting down the acoustic track, while Police Officer Anthony Ruso of the 63rd Precinct was lounging in the sound room.An unlikely combination in any event, this mixture of the music industry and the policing business, yet another anomaly was the presence of A&M recording artist Strafe (Steve Standard) behind the sound board who has added popping synthesizers and a stepped up rhythm to the song in question, a dance/rock version of %u201c Welcome Back to Brooklyn.%u201dThe evolution of this recording project reaches back as far as the Welcome Back to Brooklyn Day last year and will climax when the song is used as a public service announcement to advertise the homecoming event this year. With four diverse talents making up the final version of the song, there is more than one origin to this sentimental tribute to Brooklyn. Lt. Michael Deserio penned the song after spending Welcome Back to Brooklyn Day last year working in traffic control. HeBROOKLYNWelcome back to Brooklyn, friendWe don't take a second placeThe town that always sets thetrendwhere young and old keeppace.Welcome back to Brooklyn, friendIt's so warm and so grandThe place where time neverendsFor sure the promised landwho come from everywhere.Welcome Back to NumberOneNo need to ever roamWelcome Back to BrooklynFriendCause Brooklyn's your home.If You want to have it allSummer, spring, winter, fallNo need to ever roamYou've got a home.(Chorus)chose Rodini and Russo, two entertainers who are well-known in the police department, to perform the song on acoustic guitar at a March 27 meeting of the Welcome Back to Brooklyn Day Committee. After their performance, Borough President Howard Golden promptly adopted the song for the June event. The thought of New York City police officers harmonizing on a rock song may seem bizarre, but according to Rodini, the novelty is part of the charm, and an appropriate gesture for the two Brooklyn-born officers who have travelled around the country with their musical talents. The idea to take the song and adapt it to an electronic sound, brought Strafe into the picture. Platinum Factory president Derek McDowell donated the studio time and asked Strafe to use his talents to give the acoustic song an upbeat and contemporary sound.%u201c I rearranged the song to give it more of a pop perspective,%u201d Strafe explains. %u201c It%u2019s a very happy mood piece. Fresh and spiffy,%u201d he says. Strafe, whose specialty is dance music, saw the piece as a challenge. %u201c I was doing another interpretation of the concept and shaping it,%u201d he says.Strafe and his band, The Pre-dawn Raiders, will perform the song along with Rodini and Russo on June 8....
