I wasn%u2019t sure about this particular car, but an honest relative wanted to unload it at a fair price. Here it is, into its second decade and some 80,000 miles later. My friends have each been through three cars on the average while I have that same Falcon. I turn the key: instant response. Smooth getaway. Who needs a Rolls or Cadillac? The laureate looks and laughs at all that.A few months ago it appeared the Falcon and I had come to a parting of the ways. A tow truck swooped down and ... well, you know the story. I journeyed to the car pound where I faced an $85-retrieval fee. Eighty-five! The market value wasn%u2019t much higher. I hurried to where the car was parked along the piers. Should I take one last look and walk away? It seemed aI looked at this honorablestreet car, heavy with urbanfilm, bruised and dentedsagging slightly on weakenedsprings. I looked at this honorable street car, heavy with urban film, bruised and dented, sagging slightly on weakened springs. It was metal and glass, but at this moment I felt it had a soul. Thoughts of those years of reliability raced through my mind.I particularly recalled one evening in winter, around midnight, in a long-term parking lot at Kennedy Airport. I had just arrived on a flight from Denver after a holiday of ecstatic skiing and, skis on my shoulder, alighted from the airport bus in this deserted area. There had been a storm and the lot was covered with deep snow. I trudged against a sharp wind to where my Falcon waited, half-hidden in a drift. It was about ten degrees above zero. A white moon floated overhead, good for poets but bad for anyone about to start a car that had been standing idle for a week and looked frozen. Skis and equipment inside, I sat behind the wheel and inserted the ignition key. It was a moment of truth. I said aloud, fervently, %u201cBaby, we%u2019re miles from a garage, I can%u2019t hail a cab. You%u2019re cold, I%u2019m cold, your sparkplugs are coated with ice, not to mention oil at the firing gaps, but I beg you to start. If you start, I%u2019ll buy you new brakes and tires. I%u2019ll love and cherish you. Just don%u2019t fail me now!%u201dEven this trusty old car found a place inN orm an R o sten 's new book onneighborhood life in the city. (Phoenix/K irkPhoto)I turned the key. The Falcon groaned, coughed once %u2014 and victory! I wouldn%u2019t say I wept with emotion, but if I could have stretched my arms around this metal shape, I would have hugged her/him /it.The motor hummed, and I remember shouting in the cold, %u201cI%u2019ll never leave you!%u201d Not only snowy nights of triumph, but rainy mornings as well. How often a neighbor would show up with an embarrassed grin and say %u201cI can%u2019t start my new Volvo and I%u2019m late for work. Can I borrow your heap? It always starts in the rain.%u201dSuch words are a comfort, yet at that moment in the car pound I realized that my Falcon, sturdy in spirit, was at a ripe old age. Well, I was not going to leave that body and spirit there. Painfully, I wrote out the required check. The car was mine again. Ignition on. Reprieved! Could it be, as I drove off ... the sound of galloping hooves in the air? Falcon away! The life and destiny of my car is inextricably bound up with Melvin, my garage man. He not only keeps it in minimal repair (certain things remain unrepairable) but officially inspects it every year. He has the awesome power to keep it off the streets and possibly %u2014 if repairs are too high %u2014 toContinued on Following PageLa C iJCINA lTALIIANAl GIUGN01ftIE1 0 NATE%u201cAlL< REI m 10USIIT A L IA N F O O D T H IS JU N E .C A L L T H E G R E E N H O U S E .To celebrate the Statue of Liberty's centennial year each Friday and Saturday night of 1986 The Greenhouse will present foods from the Old World in tribute to America%u2019s immigrants, who brought our country a joyous appreciation of good food and fine wine In June, The Greenhouse celebrates the foods of Italy, including Caponata Zuppa di Pesce, Saltimbocca di Polio with Polenta, and Crostata di Ricotta.LIVE ENTERTAINMENTEach month we%u2019re also offering drinks and entertainment indigenous to the ~r n n n fr y k o n t r f e a tu r e d !u JUHC WcYcpresenting TfceC avalieri Di Roma Orchestra every Friday and Saturday from 630 - 11 PM.SAVOR T H E TASTES OF LIBERTY.Many of our Italian recipes will be taken from Tastes of Liberty-A Celebration of Our GreatEthnic Cooking.
