While the school%u2019s President, Brother Donald Sullivan, will address the 244 graduates, the main speaker of the day is Elizabeth Rosen, student valedictorian. Rosen is an adult student and mother and was an accounting major, and the top candidate for the school%u2019s General Excellence Medal.Of the graduates, 237 will receive Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees, and the remaining seven will be receiving Associate of Arts degrees.Pratt InstituteProducer Joseph Papp will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in recognition of his contributions to the cultural and artistic life in New York when he delivers an address at Pratt Institute%u2019s 97th annual commencement ceremonies on Friday, June 6, at llam at the school%u2019s Clinton Hill Campus.As part of the outdoor ceremonies, some 700 associate%u2019s, bachelor%u2019s, and m aster%u2019s degrees will be awarded in the fields of art design, engineering, architecture, science and library science.Also receiving honorary degrees will be: Brooklyn business and civic leader Robert Blum, a former officer of Abraham and Straus, Department Stores, who helped shape the commercial and cultural climate that made possible the Brooklyn renaissance of today (Doctor of Laws); and scenic designer Oliver Smith, who has designed for Broadway productions including %u201cMy Fair Lady,%u201d %u201cWest Side Story,%u201d and %u201cThe Sound of Music%u201d (Doctor of Fine Arts).Alumni achievement awards will be presented to four alumni during the ceremony: Judge Janice Bowman (Class of 1970), in recognition of her outstanding career and tireless service to the cause of human rights as judge, attorney, urban planner and concerned social activist; Maida Heatter ( Class of 1936), in recognition of her international success as an inspired author of five cookbooks filled with delectable desserts; Mort Kunstler (Class of 1950), in recognition of his extraordinary success as one of America%u2019s foremost historical artists; and Gene Norman, in recognition of his outstanding professional career and his important contributions to the preservation of New York%u2019s architectural heritage as chairman of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.New York City TechNew York City Technical College, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, will hold commencement exercises on June 9 at 7pm, in Brooklyn College%u2019s Whitman Hall. The commencement address will be delivered by Frank J. Macchiarola, president and chief executive officer of the New York City Partnership who will receive the college%u2019s President%u2019s Medal for his efforts in promoting private industry%u2019s support of education and economic development.Denise Richardson, host of WOR-TV%u2019s %u201cStraight Talk%u201d and %u201cMeet the Mayor\also speak at the ceremony, and will receive the President's Ivieuai for her \and insightful reporting.%u201d The procession will be conducted to the beat of Caribbean steel drums, called %u201cpans.%u201d The Johnston Fantastic Symphony Steel Orchestra will perform a program of both classical and popular music.City Tech will award 1200 degrees at commencement, which will be presented by President Ursula Schwerin. There will also be 25 Bachelor of Technology degrees conferred to graduates of the Hotel and Restaurant Management program, a new degree program expanded from its original two years to an optional two or four year program in 1983.Brooklyn CollegeBrooklyn College will hold its 6lst annual commencement exercises on June 10 and Governor Mario Cuomo will address the graduates at the ceremony on the college%u2019s quadrangle.The governor will receive a Presidential Medal from the college for his outstanding service to New York State, as part of the ceremony which will include the conferring of 1404 bachelor%u2019s degrees and 794 master%u2019s degrees. Also being honored at the event will be members of the Class of 1936, celebrating their 50th year reunion this day.After Cuomo%u2019s address, two Brooklyn college alumni are being recognized with honorary degrees. Harvey Lichtenstein, Class of %u201951, and president and executive producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Marcus Alexis, class of %u201953, and Dean of the College of Business Administration at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will also receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree as well. A Doctor of Fine Arts degree will be conferred on artist and sculptor Chaim Gross.There will be three other Presidential Medals given during the ceremonies. They will go to: Benjamin Ward, police commissioner; economist Joseph P. McMurray; Rev. Gardner Taylor, of the Concord Baptist Church; and Charlene Victor, founder and executive director of the Brooklyn Arts and Cultural Association.Poly Prep Country Day SchoolAuthor Malcolm Bell will be the speaker at the Poly Prep Country Day School%u2019s commencement exercises on June 12. A Brooklyn native and Poly Prep alumnus (Class of 1949) Bell is author of %u201cThe Turkey Shoot.%u201dA graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Bell was Special Chief Assistant Attorney General in 1973-74 investigating the 1981 Attica prison riot. His investigation of the retaking of the prison in which 29 inmates and 10 hostages died, was impeded by his superiors and he resigned in protest, going public with charges of an Attica %u201ccover-up%u201d in his book %u201cThe Turkey Shoot.%u201dBerkeley Carroll S t SchoolThe Berkeley Carroll Street School of Park Slope will hold commencement for the Class of 1986, its 99th graduating class, on Tuesday, June 10, at 7pm at the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. The address will be given by Roger Kubarych, chief economist for the New York Stock Exchange.
