With a score by Philip Glass it wasthe only work nominated for the PulitzerPrize in drama in 1986. This is theAmerican premiere of this section.Programs of a more purely musicalidiom are quite various this year at theNext Wave. The Kronos Quartet is a string quartetwith a passion for new music, and willagain transcend standard classical repertoire when they appear at the Festival inthree separate concerts. In the first, a newpiece by Scott Johnson, commissioned byBAM will be heard, as well as the New YorkPremiere of Philip Glass%u2019 %u201cMishimaQuartet%u201d and an adaptation of %u201cPurpleHaze%u201d by Jimmy Hendrix. On the secondevening, Terry Riley%u2019s %u201cSalome Dances forPeace, Part I and n %u201d will receive its worldpremiere. The final concert will featurepremieres by Thelonius Monk, La MonteYoung and Jon Hassell.Jon Hassell will also appear with hisensemble at the Festival. Hassell is atrumpeter / composer whose music has beendescribed as %u201cNew Age%u201d but which thecomposer considers %u201cfourth world.%u201d Hassellstudied with Stockhausen and Indian singerPandit Pran Nath and is perhaps mostfamous for his collaborations with BrianEno and the Talking Heads.Tribute will be paid to the SpaghettiWestern and film composer Ennio Morricone when the surprising John Zorn and22 musicians will perform Zorn%u2019s arrangements of Morricone%u2019s music. Includedare the famous Sergio Leone film scores. The tribute is called %u201cOnce Upon a Time inthe East Village.%u201dHALLMARK IS BOLCOLMA hallmark of this year%u2019s Next Wavecould be William Boicolm%u2019s %u201cSongs of Innocence and Experience%u201d a titan setting ofWilliam Blake%u2019s poetry cycle. Lukas Fossand the Brooklyn Philharmonic will joinforces with the Next Wave in the first ofhopefully many collaborations when theypresent this important work.Three hours in length and scored for symphony orchestra, 9 soloists (includingBolcolm%u2019s wife, mezzo-soprano Joan Morris) rock and jazz musicians and threechoruses, 200 performers in all, the Bolcolmhas been hailed by press as %u201cone of thefinest and most important new Americanworks of the decade.%u201d It has been performed three times, but never before with projections of Blake%u2019s original illuminations onmovable skrims on stage. John Rockwell ofthe %u201cTimes%u201d says that given a good recording of this work, posterity may judgeBolcolm as a major compositional torce.Bolcolm is said to successfully synthesizemany varied compositional styles, classicaland popular. All components will be conducted by Mr. Foss who with Melillo andLichtenstein picked this work for theFestival and for BAM%u2019s Anniversarycelebration.MORE THAN NEXT WAVEBesides the Next Wave, there are otherseries and events taking place concurrentlyand later in the %u201986-%u201987 season. The BrooklynPhilharmonic season consists of the Command Performance Series, Meet theModems and the Family-Community Concert Series.%u201cSpoleto Comes to BAM%u201d is a new formatin BAM%u2019s annual chamber Music ConcertSeries and this year is co-directed by ScottNickrenz and Paula Robison. Twyla iaTharp and Company will dance for a monthat the Academy in February. A GershwinFestival is also planned. The Next Wave Festival is BAM%u2019s bestpresent to itself on its anniversary. Indelightful irony, America%u2019s oldest performing arts center is now the country%u2019s mostprominent showcase for late 20th centuryvanguard performance. Whether the audience cheers or jeers, when BAM presentsthe Next Wave, New York cultural hierarchy is warped and Manhattan simplybecomes one of the provinces.BargeMusic's BestThe entertainment at Bargemusic, located on the water at Fulton Ferry, isboth musical and visual. While you listen tothe strains of various chamber musicensembles, the backdrop of Manhattan%u2019sskyline sparkles through the large picturewindow.
