PROJECT DIRECTOR ROLE
SUCCESSFULLY LEADING LARGE PROJECTS
FOR THE LONG HAUL
The elevated of scope and schedule and risks associated with Mega Projects requires elevated
involvement of the Director of Project Development role as well. The Project Director
needs to have a dedicated focus on the macro level critical decisions and communications
needed to keep a Mega Project on track to meet schedule and budget milestones.
1 COMMUNICATOR
INTERNAL
◆ All eyes are focused on Mega Projects due to scale and potential impacts to
the business. This requires Project Directors (PDs) to keep ELT and business
unit partners informed about the specifics of the project as they occur
with an emphasis on predictive analysis (what ‘could’ happen).
◆ PDs need to solicit input from the many experts that we have available and create opportunities
to involve others (special presentations, direct outreach, peer review inputs, etc.).
◆ To facilitate communications, PDs should create an Advisory Team (internal SME’s,
Client Relations, ELT members) and meet regularly (monthly/Bi-monthly).
EXTERNAL TRANSACTIONAL
◆ In order to keep Haskell and the client's reps on the same page and identify
potential escalations early enough for intervention, the project team needs
to be able to communicate directly to/with the client. This way, the PD stays
informed and becomes the first level of de-escalation when necessary.
EXTERNAL STRATEGIC
◆ PDs need to focus on strategic communication with the client and, as a result,
provide high-level status reporting to BU, Group and Executive leadership.
◆ Predict the conversations that need to occur with the client before they
become critical. Communication should happen early and often.
