The DePaul School was founded in August 1980 by Jacksonville parents F O R
who realized Northeast Florida desperately needed a school for kids with
dyslexia. Starting originally as a Saturday program, the school expanded
to a summer program and then to a full-time day school for students in 1982.
The DePaul School is a non-profit (501c3) school accredited by the AISF and
the NCPSA.
The International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as a specific learning disability that
is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with the mechanics of reading and
spelling. It may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience
that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge. Dyslexia is not a visual
processing deficit where letters or numbers are reversed. It is a specific learning difference
based upon the brain and its functioning.
Since its inception, DePaul has taught dyslexic children the way their brains are wired
to learn. In order to maximize each child’s opportunity to learn, DePaul:
• Utilizes the evidence-based Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching
• Capitalizes on the expertise of highly trained and dedicated teachers
• Maintains small class sizes to support individualized learning
• Provides specialized grouping within the classroom tailored to the student’s actual
operating levels in reading, language and math
• Utilizes multi-sensory techniques to engage students in immersive activities and
cutting-edge classroom projects that solidify skill sets
