COMMUNITY NEEDS
There are approximately 30,000 students with dyslexia in Duval County and only 400 “seats”
for them in appropriate school settings. Most teachers in public or private schools are
unaware of dyslexia and lack the tools and training to help these students.
If not taught appropriately, students with dyslexia fall behind and are at risk of school failure
and dropping out. The “school-to-prison pipeline” is real. Over 85% of incarcerated people
have a reading disorder, predominantly dyslexia. By addressing this specific learning
difference at a young age, educators have the chance to disrupt both the prison pipeline
and the poverty cycle, giving each dyslexic child a chance to succeed.
The goal of the Loyal Lions Capital Campaign is to raise money for a new and expanded
school. We need to grow and serve more students in the community, and do our part to help
our dyslexic youth achieve academic success commensurate to their neurotypical peers.
