128 The National Supply and Machinery Dealers’ Association

Don’t you think it only fair to us that some dealer or jobber
might get up and tell us what he thinks about the manufacturer?
He seems to be the fellow arraigned before this court.

                         M r. M c D o w e l l; 1 would like to tell all I know about one
manufacturer. I know what my friend Mr. Moyer wants.
About a year or fifteen months ago, when our local organization
first went into effect, we established a uniform selling price 011
Lunkenheimer goods in the Pittsburg territory.
In doing so we wrote Mr. Moyer and asked his approval of
the price and support in maintaining the price. Very promptly
came back a letter saying that their position was as it had always
been, that they did not market their goods except through the
jobber, and, to be perfectly frank, I think there were three corpora
tions in Pittsburg to whom they had been selling for a number of
years before they held us out their second discount sheet which
left us a reasonable discount if we agreed to go after this business.
I think during the life of this agreement we never found a
single instance in which they did not carry out their contract.
Samuel, I have done mv duty. (Applause).
                          P re s id e n t S t r o n g : Does Mr. Moyer feel better?
                          M r. M o v e r: I feel somewhat better.

                          P re s id e n t S t r o n g : Then I infer that later you will feel
still better. (Applause). Mr. Moyer seems so persistent in that—
                          M r. S t r e l i n g e r : 1 just wanted to suggest that Mr. Moyer
organize and conduct a class of manufacturers, and show how
                     they do it.
                          P re s id e n t S t r o n g : Mr. Moyer can show them. Will Mr.
Puchta give us a few remarks on co-operation between the
                     dealer and the manufacturer?

                          M r. P u c h t a : I did not expect to be called upon on this
subject but if there is anything I can say at this meeting which
will put the manufacturers at ease, I feel that it is a duty to do so.
The condition that we have today in the handling of supplies
and machinery is a condition; it is not a theory. I do not believe
that the manufacturers or the dealers, individually or collectively,
are really responsible for it either. It has been brought about, in
