It strikes me as a good idea to go on record and say we arc
in opposition to this movement, and send a copy of the same to
the proper committees of Congress, through our Secretary, and
also to the Xew York Herald, to show that everybody is not in
accord with their views.
W e will all admit that it is an ideal system, but when an
ideal svstem costs as much money as this we do not want it.
The resolution goes on to say that this country is the only
one which abuses it, and it winds up this way: “Your petitioners
therefore pray that a law he adopted making the metric system
compulsorv in the L nited States.’’
1 would like to offer this resolution:
“ Whereas, we oppose the present agitation to make the use
of the metric system compulsory, as it entails unnecessary expense
and inconvenience upon manufacturers and dealers in machinery
and supplies;
“Therefore, he it resolved, that we, the National Supply &
Machinery Dealers' Association, in annual convention assembled,
and the manufacturers here represented, respectfully urge upon
the Congress of the Cnited States that the optional legislation
now in effect concerning the use of the metric system is sufficient
for all practical purposes.
“ Resolved, that the Secretary he directed to forward copies
of this resolution to the proper committees of Congress and to
the publishers of the New York Ilerald.”
