“Synagogues Around the World” – Istanbul Crash Course in Building the Third Holy Temple
Sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee
Learn about the synagogue that was founded in 1992 in order to commem-
orate the 500 years of existence of the Sephardim Jews from the Ottoman
period up through the Modern Republic of Turkey. The Jewish community
in Turkey has a long and rich history that stretches back 2,000 years to Ro-
man times when Jews left Jerusalem and dispersed throughout the world.
One of the unique things you’ll learn about is the history of the Camondo
family, who were called the “Rothschilds of the East,” and their journey
from Istanbul to Paris. Hear from tour guide Mois Gabay, who was born in
Istanbul. He’s one of the board members of the Quincentennial Foundation
Museum of Turkish Jews. Join us from noon to 1:00 p.m. on Zoom for this
virtual tour. Tickets are $36 per household for the four-part series held on
Thursdays in August. To register, visit jfedsrq.org/events. For more infor-
mation, contact Jeremy Lisitza at jlisitza@jfedsrq.org or 941.343.2113.
“Jewish Tragedy in Jewish Paradise”
It is not an overstatement to say that living in Surfside, Florida, beside the
glorious Atlantic Ocean, was considered paradise for multitudes of Jews.
But today, that image is permanently scarred with memories of a cata-
clysm that crushed Jewish bodies in an instant. Likewise, for multitudes
of Israeli Jews, celebrating Lag B’Omer festivities amongst thousands of
fellow Jews at Mount Meron is a euphoric experience, but no more, as 45
Jewish men were crushed alive. What are the lessons and why? This class,
presented by the Al Katz Center, begins at 11:00 a.m. via Zoom. Cost: $10
per day or $50 for all classes this month. To RSVP and receive the Zoom
link, please call Beverly Newman at 941.313.9239.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 8
“18 Jewish Holidays: The Auspicious Month of Elul”
It is a wise choice that Jews are urged to spend the entire Hebrew month of
Elul in preparation for properly observing and welcoming the High Holy
Days season, when the Jewish world turns inward to scrutinize itself per-
son by person in a series of Divinely decreed days of remembrance, atone-
ment and enthusiastic celebrations. Thus, the Jewish people move along
a continuum of introspection and communal prayer that progresses from
self-improvement to global joy, from the individual to the universal. This
class, presented by the Al Katz Center, begins at 1:00 p.m. via Zoom. Cost:
$10 per day or $50 for all classes this month. To RSVP and receive the
Zoom link, please call Beverly Newman at 941.313.9239.
