• • To commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War, the Center for Korea-America Freedom & Security Policy (KAFSP)
held various events with the Korean Veterans Association (President Shin Sang-tae) and the Korea Conservative Political Action Conference (KCPAC
President Grant Newsham) to remember the sacrifice of Korean War veterans and emphasize the importance of the U.S.-ROK alliance. The events
were held from June 24 to 26 in Hawaii.
• • The events were attended by high-ranking officials, including former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, former Army Chief of Staff Kim Jin-young,
and former Deputy Commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command Choi Byung-hyuk. They were joined by experts on Korean
Peninsula security, including Lee Jung-hoon, professor of International Relations at Yonsei University’s Graduate School of International Studies.
On the U.S. side, officials in attendance included David Stillwell, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Republican
leaders, and veterans of the Korean War.
• • On June 24, security and military experts from both the United States and South Korea participated in a panel on “National Security and the
Korea-U.S. Alliance.” They discussed ways to implement the goal announced by President Yoon Suk-yeol during his summit with U.S. President
Joe Biden. Yoon said he hopes to develop the alliance between the two countries into a global, comprehensive, and strategic alliance.
• • From 4 p.m. on June 24, Honorary Chairman of KAFSP Annie Chan hosted the Korea-U.S. Alliance Friendship Dinner at her residence.
The guests included 250 South Korean and U.S. personnel and Korean War veterans. Around 100 people from the U.S. side attended the event,
including Admiral Thomas B. Fargo, former Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, James Kelly, former Assistant Secretary of State for East
Asian and Pacific Affairs, and Retired Major General Robert Lee. Roughly 150 South Korean guests joined the event, including Hong Seok in,
Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in Honolulu, Park Bong-ryong, president of the United Korean Association of Hawaii, and Park Jae won,
president of the National Unification Advisory Council’s Hawaii branch.
• • At 9 a.m. on June 25, the KAFSP attended a Korean War memorial ceremony organized by the Consulate General in Hawaii and the Korean War
Veterans Association (KWVA) at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn and his wife,
KAFSP Chairman General Kim Jin-young and Honorary Chairman Annie Chan, former Deputy Commander Choi Byung-hyuk, and Executive
Director of the Korean Veterans Association Choi Jong-il laid the wreath. U.S. Navy Admiral John C. Aquilino, current Commander of the U.S.
Indo-Pacific Command, delivered a speech at the event.
• • On June 26, the KAFSP visited the Christ United Methodist Church, the first Korean church founded overseas, and the Korean Christian Church,
which houses a statue of South Korea’s founding President Syngman Rhee. These two churches represent the history and symbolism of Hawaii,
where Korean immigration to the United States began.
• • On June 27, the KAFSP attended a reception held on the Republic of Korea Navy warship Marado organized by the Korean Navy. The Korean
Navy invited Koreans living overseas to visit the ship and enjoy the reception. The ship was participating in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise
(RIMPAC). Key figures including former Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn and senior retired South Korean generals participated in the reception.
They encouraged the sailors participating in the exercise and met with Korean residents of Hawaii.
• • These events were covered by various media outlets from the United States and South Korea, including the Voice of America and New Daily.
