2018 Tobacco Surcharge
As you enroll for your 2018 beneits, you must indicate whether or
not you and your medical plan covered spouse are tobacco users. Your
tobacco attestation will also determine the basis of your critical illness
premium if elected. If you or your spouse is a tobacco user you will pay
an additional $23.08 per pay period for either of the medical plan options.
If both you and your spouse are tobacco users, you will pay an additional
$46.16 per pay period for either medical plan option. Each non-tobacco
user will save $600 a year in medical premiums, a total of $1,200 if both
you and your enrolled spouse are tobacco free.
What Does it Mean to Be a “Tobacco User” Under
the Plan?
You and/or your spouse are a “tobacco user” if either of you have used
tobacco products ive or more times over the last six months, including
cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, pipe tobacco, e-cigarettes/vapors,
or any similar tobacco-related product. For the purpose of the surcharge,
if you and/or your spouse are currently using nicotine patches, nicotine
gum, or other items which are considered primary tobacco cessation
aids you and/or your spouse will still be required to complete a tobacco
cessation program to receive the discounted rate.
As a courtesy, employees hired in 2018 will not be subject to the tobacco
surcharge for the entire calendar year. However, if you and/or your
spouse currently use tobacco, you are strongly encouraged to participate
in the various tobacco cessation programs offered through the CareHere
clinic throughout the 2018 calendar year. You also have access to free
tobacco cessation medications through the CareHere clinic and through
the Cigna prescription drug coverage. See the Cigna preventive drug list
or contact the CareHere clinic for more details. Good luck with your
tobacco cessation efforts! Your reduced medical plan premiums will
continue in 2018 if you are successful.
