Emirati Women’s Day, observed annually on August 28, stands as a dedicated celebration to honor the invaluable
contributions of Emirati women to the progress and development of the United Arab Emirates. This special day marks not
only the ongoing accomplishments of women across all sectors but also commemorates the founding anniversary of the
UAE General Women’s Union (GWU) established in 1975. Created by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known
as the “Mother of the Nation,” the day was officially inaugurated in 2015 to spotlight women’s empowerment and reflect on
the strides made in advancing gender equality and social inclusion.

Historical significance and progress

The year 2025 holds profound significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the General Women’s Union,
a pivotal institution that has steadfastly championed women’s rights, leadership, and empowerment in the UAE. Since its
inception in 1975, the GWU has been instrumental in shaping policies, programs, and initiatives that support women’s
socio-economic, educational, and political participation.

Emirati Women’s Day was officially established by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak to celebrate this ongoing legacy of
progress and to serve as an annual reminder of the vital role women play in nation-building. Over five decades, Emirati
women have transitioned from traditional roles to becoming key decision-makers and innovators in diverse fields, reflecting
the UAE’s commitment to fostering a gender-inclusive society.
