The UAE Council for Fatwa is pioneering the use of AI-powered drones to sight the Shawwal crescent moon for
the year 1446 AH, reinforcing the nation’s leadership in technological innovation for astronomical observation.

As the first in the world to integrate this advanced technology into moon sighting, the council previously employed
it to observe the Ramadan crescent earlier this year. The initiative aims to enhance accuracy and overcome

environmental challenges that can obstruct traditional visual sighting methods.

Several AI-equipped drones will be launched from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory, ascending over 300

meters to capture high-resolution images of the moon. These images will be processed using artificial intelligence
to determine the precise moment of the crescent’s birth and its visibility. The approach aligns with Islamic tradition,
where direct visual observation remains the primary method for confirming the lunar calendar.

By leveraging AI-powered analysis and precision optics, the UAE continues to set a global benchmark in merging
faith with cutting-edge technology, ensuring a more reliable and efficient process for moon sighting.
