UAE To Use Drones And AI For Shawwal Crescent Sighting

The UAE Fatwa Council will convene the Shawwal Crescent Sighting Committee on March 29, using AI-powered observatories
and drones to enhance the moon sighting process.

The meeting will take place at the historic Al-Hosn site in Abu Dhabi, chosen for its cultural and national significance. This marks
the second time the UAE has deployed drones for crescent moon sighting, reinforcing its technological leadership in
astronomical observations.

Drones & AI-Powered Observatories

Drones equipped with high-precision lenses will be launched from the Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory and ascend
over 300 metres to capture clear images of the crescent moon. These drones will be guided by precise astronomical calculations
and overcome challenges that may obstruct visual sighting.

Additionally, AI technology will be used to analyze images, process data, and accurately determine the crescent’s birth and
visibility.

Participating Observatories

Five AI-powered observatories across the UAE will take part in the sighting:

Al-Khatim Astronomical Observatory

Jabal Hafeet Observatory
