Dubai World Central: A Megaproject Taking Shape
The first phase of developing the proposed passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport,
also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), is “progressing well,” according to Khalifa Al Zaffin,
Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP).
In an announcement made on Thursday, Al Zaffin confirmed that contracts worth Dh1 billion have
been awarded towards the construction of Phase 1 of the airport in Dubai South. This ambitious
project is set to revolutionise the aviation landscape in the UAE and create substantial economic
opportunities for residents and businesses alike.
Key Development: The first phase of Al Maktoum International Airport is scheduled for completion
by 2032, with the capacity to handle 150 million passengers annually. Once operational, it will
progressively take over all flight operations from Dubai International Airport (DXB).
Economic Impact: Jobs and Housing for a New City
The economic implications of this mega-project extend far beyond the aviation sector. According to
Al Zaffin, the development is expected to support up to 1 million people through employment and
housing opportunities, forming an integral part of the Dubai South master-planned city and logistics
hub.
This projection aligns with findings from our recent report on Dubai’s aviation sector creating
185,000 new jobs by 2030, which highlighted how the emirate’s expanding aviation industry will
transform the employment landscape, with one in four jobs in Dubai ultimately connected to
aviation.
