Dubai: 202 beggars arrested, many on visit visa
The number of beggars arrested in Dubai has reached 202 as of the first half of Ramadan,
with many of those arrested on visit visa, according to Dubai Police.
The arrests were part of the anti-begging campaign launched by Dubai Police in
collaboration with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai,
Dubai Municipality, and the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department in Dubai.
Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department
at the Dubai Police, said among those arrested were 112 men and 90 women.
Al Shamsi said while majority of those arrested were on visit visas, others were residents
taking advantage of people’s sentiments during Ramadan. The police official said that legal
measures have been taken against the offenders.
Under the UAE law, begging is considered a criminal offence that will lead to jail time, a
fine of not less than Dh5,000. Offenders may also face deportation. The punishment will
be more severe if the beggar is found to feign disability or injury, has a source of income,
