UAE Launches Initiative to Distribute
5 Million Meals to Needy from
Surplus Food
In a bid to tackle hunger and food waste, the UAE has unveiled a new initiative to distribute 5
million meals to the needy using surplus food sourced from 350 hotels and food
establishments in Dubai. Spearheaded by Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum,
the initiative aims to address food insecurity while fostering community engagement.
Sheikha Hind, the wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice
President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Supreme Chairperson of the
UAE Food Bank, launched the program. Sheikh Mohammed expressed his support for the
initiative, highlighting Sheikha Hind’s dedication to humanitarian causes.
Since its establishment, the Emirates Food Bank has served 35 million individuals,
emphasizing its commitment to alleviating hunger. The initiative underscores the UAE’s
ongoing efforts to combat food waste and ensure access to nutritious meals for all segments of
society.
The Emirates Food Bank, operating under the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global
Initiatives, collaborates with various stakeholders to collect surplus food and distribute it to
those in need. With the support of 5,000 volunteers, the initiative aims to make a tangible
impact on communities while promoting the values of generosity and compassion.
