When Where and How?
Portion control is the art of measuring your food using your hand as
a reference. There are a few things you must learn first, and it takes some
practice to get it right. The good news is that you only need your hand and
you typically don’t have to be perfectly exact. So, to explain this I’m going
to use the practice and recourses taught to me by Precision Nutrition. For the
purposes of this book we will briefly talk about it here, but we will go into
greater detail about this technique in the Nutrition 101 Challenge.
In this system—developed by Precision Nutrition—you use your
hand as a portable portioning tool. You’re not actually measuring your food,
but rather using your hand to gauge portion size. And because each hand
portion correlates to a certain number of proteins, carbs, or fat, this method
counts calories and macros for you.
• Your palm determines your protein portions.
• Your fist determines your vegetable portions.
• Your cupped hand determines your carbportions.
• Your thumb determines your fat portions.
