Beethoven wrote the music for a play of the same name in 1809 which follows
Count Egmont and his refusal to give up his liberty with tragic consequences.
And you can hear all the drama from the first moment Hindoyan picks up his
baton with every one of the master musicians on stage capturing the emotion of
this well loved concert hall piece.

I disappeared somewhere in the strings of soloist Jonathan Aasgaard's cello
during the orchestra's performance of Richard Strauss' Don Quixote. The
orchestra's performance of this epic tone poem was enthralling, with wonderful
sweeping sections punctuated by mixed orchestral textures and soloists.

Domingo Hindoyan, chief conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic orchestra
It was a clever programme celebrating the power of the orchestra's string
section. And Hindoyan, a violinist himself, shares smiles with his string section

during a thrilling performance of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. Opening with those
notes the audience is thrust across the dazzling first movement with a wonderful

excitement captured by Hindoyan himself in his excited conducting, clear he
knows every single note for every instrument.
What struck me most about this performance was the great intent on the soft,
close playing in parts to allow the incredible crescendoes to build and fill your
head as you sink into the sounds and forget the world outside exists. What
better way to spend a chilly winter evening? In my opinion, there isn't.

If you have never been before (you can read our reviewer's first visit here), or
you are overdue a visit, I can not recommend it enough. As always, Domingo
Hindoyan and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra were magnificent and
an incredible jewel our city can not shout loudly enough about.

If you want to hear Beethoven's 5th live or disappear into the lush sounds of
cello strings, there is another performance on Sunday, January 21. I am already
anticipating it could be sold out, if so, you can see all the other performances
coming up this year via the Philharmonic's website here.
