What is the CBSO’s reputation like around the world? It must be
inspiring to lead an orchestra with such a rich history?

The CBSO is regarded worldwide as a world-class orchestra. Legendary
conductors have left their mark on the ensemble, there are incredible
recordings around, and an overall aura of utmost quality and commitment.

It is highly inspiring and challenging to lead an orchestra of such stature, but
with a fresh pair of eyes and ears, I think I can bring something of value to the
ensemble. Music making is – like the universe – a never-ending cycle of
               transformation and metamorphosis.

You’ve travelled around the world and been based in a number of
different cities. What are your thoughts on Birmingham?

I’ve enjoyed very much the little free time I have had in Birmingham – and as a
foodie I have been so very happy. I already have my favourite spots and can’t
wait to add more on my list. But, of course, my trips are so packed with work
and preparation that I haven’t had the chance to go out that much yet, but I
am very much looking forward to the theatre, live music, exhibitions and so on.

What is it like to be based at a stunning venue like the Symphony Hall?
How does it compared with other venues you’ve played at?

All great orchestras – from Boston to St Petersburg, or from Vienna to
Rejkjavik are identified to their great hall. It is our main instrument, actually. A
hall shapes the sound and identity of an orchestra, it is an undeniable and
essential vehicle between score, conductor, orchestra musicians and public.
The Symphony Hall is for all of us a great instrument that allows us to explore
the greatness of music and it is an immense joy to be able to rehearse and
perform in such a venue. Having performed in most ‘modern’ halls worldwide I
am very proud to call Symphony Hall my ‘office’!

               Finally, what makes Birmingham epic?

A city and region that looks towards the future in all aspects – from urbanism,
food scene, cultural scene, thinking progressively, welcoming and
encompassing all cultures and creative energies. It is by all means an Epic
               City!

The CBSO celebrates the 100th anniversary of its first-ever concert with
a landmark performance conducted by Sir Simon Rattle this Saturday,
               5th September, broadcast on the
orchestra’s YouTube and Facebook channels at 7pm
