Les Dennis makes his operatic debut in ENO’s mischievous HMS

        Pinafore

        ★★★★☆

Lizzi Gee’s choreography is joyous and admirably performed, especially because it’s mostly not

hired hoofers doing the tapping and hornpipes, but the vivacious ENO chorus and multi-talented

principals such as John Savournin (a brilliant John Cleese-like turn as Captain Corcoran),
Marcus Farnsworth (superbly hearty as the Boatswain) and the astonishing nine-year-old Rufus

Bateman as an urchin “midshipmite” (a character invented by McCrystal) who pops up

        everywhere. To December 11; eno.org

Joyce DiDonato emerges from lockdown with an electrifying recital

        ★★★★☆

Even when her talents were misused or overindulged, we still had that peerless voice, so
eloquently flexible across every register, and that friendliness that led her to praise us for

coming en masse and sitting with strangers.
