Lisette Oropesa shines in the Royal Opera’s Verdi revival

Oropesa was superbly believable and moving, clutching on to beds and table, tottering, falling,

hair bedraggled, face tortured with pain, voice and breathing sufficiently weakened that her final

high-flying spasms of song never felt incongruous. As for the singing, and her general grip on
Violetta’s character, the soprano proved the worth of all the glowing reviews received after she

played the role in February 2020 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. To November
