Frederick Jones as Tom Rakewell and Nardus Williams as Anne Truelove in The Rake’s Progress

The Rake’s Progress — still delighting audiences after 46 years

        ★★★★☆

If any opera production stays in the repertoire for 46 years, and shows every sign of delighting

audiences for at least another 50, then it must have very special qualities. That’s certainly true of

John Cox’s 1975 staging of Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, so splendidly designed by David

Hockney, and briefly back at Glyndebourne this week as part of its annual touring

programme. Touring to December 1; glyndebourne.com

Opera North’s vibrant Bernstein double bill, with dance

        ★★★★☆

Many opera houses incorporate opera and ballet companies, yet it’s rare to see the two sharing

the same bill. That’s one reason to catch this programme, in which music written by Leonard

Bernstein in the 1950s is interpreted by Opera North and Phoenix Dance Theatre, both based in

Leeds. To October 30, then touring; operanorth.co.uk
