SAMARA (or, the John and Catherine Christian House)
The John E. Christian House is considered a pristine example of what Wright referred to as his “Usonian design,”
which encapsulated his vision of the United State’s city planning and architectural styles. His dream was to be able
to provide affordable custom home designs for Americans. They were often single-level, with an elevated design so
homeowners could enjoy a level of luxury without a luxury price tag.
Wright worked directly with Purdue University Professor John E. Christian for six years, crafting the 2,200 square-foot
home in West Lafayette, Indiana. The home is inspired by tree keys (similar to a Maple key) called a Samara found on
the property. Wright incorporated the design in his own bespoke windows, dining furniture and living room rug to
keep the home grounded in the surrounding nature. To support the Christian’s outgoing and social lifestyle, Wright
designed a living room that could host up to 50 of their friends, family, university faculty, staff and students.
John and Christine lived in and lovingly maintained their home right up until their deaths. In 2015, SAMARA was
designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark and is visited by thousands annually.
