Fans

               LEFT: Fans of Wool and Linen Victorian era. Antique show or shop purchase prior to 2003. 46½"x47" Fabric:
               Wool ground, wool and linen fan staves, embroidery in various stitches outlining fans. Batting: None.
               Backing: Pieced blue velveteen that appears to have been assembled from random scraps. Edge: Each side is
               turned under and the edge is machine stitched. Piecing: Blocks are assembled by machine. Fans are pieced
               by hand onto a finely-woven, thin, hard, stiff fabric that resembles heavily starched linen, and looks like
               a brown paper bag. Quilting: None. Condition: Excellent physical condition. The design is dramatic for
               its contrasts, but the piecing is crude. Comment: A few freckles of embroidery are scattered on the wool;
               perhaps they treated moth holes.
