Necktie 1940s. eBay purchase. 66"x82" Fabric: Silk rays, satin centers. Batting: Foundation blocks, but no
batting. Backing: Maroon satin matching the center appliqué on each block. Edge: The back is brought to
the front and caught by hand. Piecing: Rays and blocks, by machine. Round centers of blocks, by hand.
Quilting: Along the center of each ray, by hand, 5 stitches to the inch. Condition: One to three rays in most
blocks have frayed. Comment: Because of the business of the design, the frayed silks don’t show. I wanted
to add this piece to the collection because it is such a typical quilt from the age of many silk neckties. I saw
skirts made the same way during the hippie era.
