Door knocker discovered in excavations at the Muristan site in the Old City of Jerusalem, the area where the
Crusader era Hospitaller hospital was located. The knocker, in the form of a lion’s head, was meant to ward off
forces of evil. It was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century by members of the Order of St John, who
renewed their medical activities in Jerusalem at the close of the 19th century. It is displayed at the Order’s
center, St John’s Gate, London | Museum of the Order of St John, London
