of the Jews during his lifetime and the story of
                        his immigration to Eretz Israel.

Oneg Shabbat is an anthology of homilies in
three parts, on the Torah, Psalms and the Mishna,
which he collected from many books, from the
classics of rabbinic literature to modern works,
by Sephardi, Oriental and Ashkenazi writers. The
                        collection includes passages from approximately
                        149 works, and reflects R. Matityahu’s broad
education in rabbinic literature, which exceeded
by far that of his compatriots and that received
                        in their “midrash” (elementary school).
The book also reflects his spiritual character,

ִe.g. his description of Kabbala as “the true

wisdom” and his admiration for the Hida as “the
great rabbi, light of Israel,” from whose works he
                        quoted abundantly.
Dr. Itzhak Bezalel, the first editor of Pe`amim, is
engaged in research on the history and identity
of Sephardi and Oriental Jewry in the nineteenth
                        and twentieth centuries.

The issue also includes a review by Yigal S. Nizri
of Paul B. Fenton's Le Pogrome de Fes ou Le tritle
1912 and a description of the activity of the
Center for the Study of the Jews of Bukhara at
                        the Ben-Zvi Institute.
