That’s not an uncommon development with knots, a momentary setback when you find
you can’t tie a knot that was completely natural to you. But it’s not a bad one. The biologist
had simply reached a proficiency level in tying the bowline that had long left behind the
actual steps involved. He was “overthinking” the situation when asked to teach.
But that sort of proficiency is what you’re after. When you find you’ve tied a bowline
without thinking of its steps, you’ve reached something akin to proficiency in a foreign
language, when you no longer must translate a sentence, but just say it naturally.
Develop the knots you need, add a few as you learn them (like the mushrooms), and
really learn them. You and your horses will be happier and safer.
