CATEGORIZATION OF DEFECTS

Notches

INCLUDES:
▪ Notches “V” type and “U” type resulting from:

o Construction problems
o Subsequent damage concentrate stress at the bottom of the notch, up
to a factor x3
▪ Welding seams with incomplete root penetration (i.e. weld joining 2

contiguous plates) shall be considered as “V” notch type.

CATEGORIZATION / ACTION:
▪ The deeper and sharper the notch, the greater is the stress concentration at

the bottom of the notch:

o Notches (“V” or “U”) with depth ≥ 10% of a structural member =>
LFF= B (Likely)
▪ Faulty welds considered as “V” notch shall follow the categorization criteria

of “Connections”.
