Much to my dismay it was Miss Grace. I looked at
her and promptly rolled over to face Aroha.
Miss Grace then began to whisper about all the
carvings and how important each one was.
“Everything in the design of the meeting house is there
to help us remember who we are. They detail our
origins from the union of Rangi and Nuku.

“They are our very beginnings, our earliest
ancestors from the stars. The intricate carvings, scrolls,
woven patterns on the ceiling, walls and floor mats all
record the story of our people, of our whanau, of our
ancestry and of our vision. “
As she continued to speak, her voice took on a
hypnotic rhythm and I found myself falling into a
dream state.

At first I was flying into the stars
carved in the ceiling above

And then as I looked at the walls
they became living faces.
These faces looked into my eyes
with a deep knowing of connection.
