19. Letter Writing

Letters are very important means of keeping contact with friends and relatives. Unlike a
conversation over the phone, a letter can be preserved for posterity and can be read any

time and again. In other words, it is a substitute to conversation.

Letters can be broadly divided into :

                1. Informal or Personal Letter

                2. Formal or Business Letter.

Informal Letters : Letters to friend, relatives and acquaintances, letters of congratulations,
                invitations, etc.

Formal Letters : Letters to the editors of newspapers, businessmen, authorities, etc.

Note Applications are also part of formal letter.

In all kind of letters, there are six points of form to be attended to, such as :

Ÿ The heading consisting of (a) writers address and (b) the date.

Ÿ The courteous greeting or salutation

Ÿ The communication – The body of the letter

                Ÿ The subscription or conclusion

                Ÿ The signature

Ÿ The subscription of the envelope.
