Once upon a time large areas of our country were covered with forests.

As the population grew, we cut down trees to get more and more land for

            agriculture, houses and industries.

A great part of our forest wealth has been lost. Now, we are trying to

plant new trees all over the country.

A new festival has been started for this purpose . It is called ‘Vana

Mahotsava’ or the 'Afforestation Festival'. Since trees are the country's real

wealth, it is our sacred duty to protect them.

Are trees living things? Trees are the most long-lived creatures on the

            earth.

They don’t seem to be living because they neither move nor cry. But the

fact is that they also eat, drink and breathe as animals do. They also sleep at

night. The touch-me-not plant folds its leaves and even draws back from

            human touch.

wealth – valuable material, purpose something set, afforestation – to establish forest cover on,
                                                      –
sacred – holy, protect – save.
