ED arrests Hemant Soren a er he resigns as Jharkhand
Chief Minister
The Enforcement Directorate on January 31
arrested Hemant Soren in a land scam case
soon after he resigned as Jharkhand Chief
Minister. The resignation came after the ED
officials questioned him for more than seven
hours at his official residence in Ranchi.
Jharkhand Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan has
accepted his resignation.
He has challenged his arrest in the Jharkhand
High Court. The hearing will take place on
February 1. Many tribal bodies issued a call for a
bandh on February 1 to protest against the
arrest.
Over the weekend, a cat-and-mouse game between the ED and Soren played out in Jharkhand and Delhi
amid speculation that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader was "untraceable". However, Soren
eventually re-surfaced in Ranchi on Tuesday and held a meeting with his legislators amid rumours that his
wife Kalpana Soren may be made the next Chief Minister.
Soren was arrested in a case related to an illegal change of ownership of land in Jharkhand. So far, 14
people have been arrested in the case.
Since Jharkhand's formation on November 15, 2000, the state has seen six chief ministers and three
President's rule terms. Only one CM, Raghubar Das of BJP, has managed to complete his full term (2014 to
2019).

Hemant Soren's father and former CM Shibu Soren was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court on
December 5, 2006, for his involvement in the 1994 abduction and murder of his private secretary Shashi
Nath Jha.
