8 Weather, Climate and Adaptations
Chapter in a Nutshell
v The day-to-day changes in weather are influenced by various elements of weather.
v The main factor which is responsible for all the changes in the weather is the Sun.
v The other factors which influence weather are temperature, rainfall, humidity and winds.
v Temperature can be defined as the measure of the degree of hotness or coldness of an
object.
v The temperature of a place is measured by a special thermometer called the maximum and
minimum thermometer.
v Temperature varies greatly at different regions of the Earth due to unequal amount of heat
received from the Sun.
v The quantity of rain that falls in a particular region, in a given time is termed as rainfall.
v Rain is measured in inches or millimeters using a rain gauge.
v The amount of moisture present in the air is the humidity of the place.
v Humidity is measured using a hygrometer.
v Weather is influenced by two factors – wind speed and wind direction.
v Wind speed tells us how fast the wind is blowing.
v Wind speed can be measured by an anemometer or by the Beaufort scale.
v The wind direction indicates the direction from which the wind blows.
v Wind direction is measured by a wind vane.
v Climate is the average weather conditions in a given area over a longer period of time.
v The main factors that influence the climate of the Earth are the Earth’s tilt and its distance
from the Sun.
v The climate of a place has a great effect on the flora and fauna of that place.
v Adaptation is a process where an animal develops features better suited to survive in its
habitat.
v Camouflage is a defence mechanism that helps animals blend in with their surroundings.
