Ans. (a) Adaptation: Adaptation is a process where an animal develops features better

suited to survive in its habitat.

                      (b) Humidity: The amount of moisture present in the air is the humidity of the
                            place.

                  2. What do you mean by latitude?

Ans. The distance from the equator represents latitude.
                  3. Why is weather forecasting important?

Ans. Prior knowledge of the weather keeps us ready for the places we visit or the activities

                       we plan for the day.
                  4. What do you mean by camouflage?

Ans. Camouflage is a defence mechanism that helps animals blend in with their

                       surroundings.
                  5. Explain how altitude affects the Indian climate.

Ans. Altitude is the height of a place above the sea level. We feel colder as we move to

higher altitudes. This is because the air becomes thinner and is not able to absorb

and retain heat. Hilly areas or high mountain regions, therefore, remain snow-clad
due to very low temperature throughout the year.

                  6. Write a short note on the characteristics of the red-eyed tree frogs.

Ans. Trees are the habitats for the red-eyed frogs who spend most of their time on them.
They have sticky pads on their feet that help them climb trees. This frog species is

bright green in colour with pale yellow stripes to camouflage themselves in between

the leaves. The dark red eyes are a defence mechanism to scare their enemies. They
sleep during the day and stay active during the night.

                  7. How do chameleons catch their prey?

Ans. Chameleon shoots out its tongue at once to catch its food and then rolls it back into

                       the mouth.
                  8. How do desert tortoises obtain water?

Ans. The desert tortoise obtains water from the food they eat and the adults tortoises can

survive for about a year without water. They dig shallow pits to catch the water from
                       infrequent rains.

                  9. What do you mean by migration?

Ans. The seasonal long distance movement of some animals to avoid harsh climatic
                       conditions is called migration.
