Vision and Goals
When editor John Clarke included the idiom “seeing is believing” in an
anthology of proverbs in 1639, he could not have realized that several centuries
later it would be the perfect definition of vision, as the word is meant in the
business world. For any newly minted businessperson, one of the most important
factors for success is the ability to conjure a mental image of it by some future
date. Vision helps the businessperson identify and set goals, and it forces him to
focus. Visions are as varied as the universe of business. By communicating the
vision to colleagues, the businessperson leads his entire team toward its
fulfillment. The quotes here highlight the importance of having a vision—and
goals—and the perils inherent in setting out without one.
Confusion of goals and perfection of means seems, in my opinion, to
characterize our age.
—Albert Einstein, developer of the theory of relativity
If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your
energy, and inspires your hopes.
—Andrew Carnegie, steel industrialist
