—Owen Felltham, English writer (from his book Resolves, Divine, Moral, Political, of Owen
            Felltham,	1620)

Drive	thy	business,	let	not	that	drive	thee.

—Benjamin	Franklin,	US	founding	father	and	inventor

In	business,	the	idea	of	measuring	what	you	are	doing,	picking	the	measurements
that	count	like	customer	satisfaction	and	performance	…	you	thrive	on	that.

—Bill Gates, cofounder of Microsoft and philanthropist (from Politico.com, March 13, 2013)

Every business has competition. Even the American Football League has to
compete with basketball, hockey and other forms of entertainment. Every
business also wants to beat the competition, steal its market share or perhaps
even drive it into bankruptcy. But when starting out, realize that competition
isn’t	necessarily	a	bad	thing.	It	shows	there’s	already	some	demand	for	the	goods
or	services	you	intend	to	offer.	In	fact,	no	competition	is	usually	something	that
should	be	treated	with	caution	not	jubilation.

—Peter J. Patsula, founder of Patsula Media and author (from his online publication The
Entrepreneur’s Guidebook Series, 2001–2007, Guidebook #47, “Spying on the Competition”)
There	is	at	least	one	point	in	the	history	of	any	company	when	you	have	to	change	dramatically	to
rise	to	the	next	level	of	performance.	Miss	that	moment—and	you	start	to	decline.

—Andy Grove, chairman and CEO of Intel (from Fortune magazine, February 22, 1993)

You	have	to	have	your	heart	in	the	business	and	the	business	in	your	heart.

—Thomas	Jefferson,	founding	father	and	president
