40 GETTING STARTED

initiation techniques. The first is to address the problem with overcoming inertia.
It is important and helpful to have a mechanism and templates to facilitate the
initiation of the project. The more that we have in the way of guides and guide-
lines, the easier it is to get started.

Another is to help funnel the early project efforts toward the project objec-
tives. The opposite of procrastination in project initiation is to move too quickly.
All too often we find that we “don’t know where we’re going, but we’re making
good time.” This will backfire, and have a deleterious effect on project success.

Project charters, team building, strategic planning, structure building, all help
us to get off to a good start.
