n At every opportunity we raised the matter of unrecorded information that
“everybody knows” and gathered the data from the folk tales and friendly
discussion passing this to management for recording and communication.
This was completed at a cost per person which was considerably lower than might
have been spent using an outplacement agency. The feeling among survivors and ex-
employees that everybody had received the help that they needed lasted for years and
the image of the firm within their community was enhanced rather than diminished
after downsizing.
Summary
I I make no apology for the comparative length of this chapter. The
I number of questions simply reflects the vital importance of getting
I it right where people are concerned. Business is about people. No
I technological advance can ever change that. I have a simple creed
I on which my attitude to business is based and it is this:
I consistently making the best use of the best people. People are not
I resources, most important or otherwise of the firm. They are
I growing, independent individuals who can, if they choose to do so,
I deliver to the business superior skills and knowledge,
I commitment, quality, economy and high productivity. By
I attracting the best people and enabling them to make the best use
I of their many qualities you will succeed.
