In the year 1980, Archbishop

Ricardo Cardinal Vidal sought

permission from the Vatican to

initiate the beatification and

canonization cause for Pedro
Calungsod.

March 1997, it was approved

by the Sacred Congregation for the

Causes of Saints. January 2000,

Pope John Paul II approved the

decree regarding his martyrdom,

and set the beatification on March

5, 2000 at St. Peter's Square.
