Founded over 1,000 years ago on the shore of a vast, beautiful lake near the Jura Mountains, the city of Neuchâtel is home to 32 Swiss heritage sites of national significance. Since 1956, this idyllic place has also been home to Neuchâtel Junior College.
NJC is perched up high on a hill with a magnificent, unobstructed view of Lake Neuchâtel. On clear days, the Swiss Alps can be viewed from the Junior College’s expansive terrace. The campus has three buildings – Le Foyer, Le Pavillon and Le Centre d’Études – housing classrooms, labs, library resources, administrative offices, including the University Placement/Guidance Office, as well as dedicated student study and social space. The campus is extensive when considering students’ easy access to modern facilities within the city of Neuchâtel, including the Université de Neuchâtel’s Library resources and Fitness Centre. There are also many Extracurricular opportunities available within the city, including, but not limited to an Olympic-standard aquatic facility, Lake Neuchâtel watersports, opportunities to practice with local sports teams (e.g. hockey, rugby, sailing, etc.) as well as continuing music lessons on virtually any instrument at the Conservatoire de Musique Neuchâtelois.
NJC is located near the main post office, and, conveniently for the travel program, la gare — the Central Train Station. The city centre and all of its amenities is a short 10-minute walk downtown.
The climate in Neuchâtel is mild with a lengthy autumn and early
spring. Snow is rare in the winter months in the city, but excellent alpine conditions are just a 20-minute bus ride away for those who enjoy snowboarding and skiing. The finest ski resorts in the Alps are just under two hours away by train.
