NEUCHÂTEL JUNIOR COLLEGE
UNIVERSITY PLACEMENT AND GUIDANCE
CONTINUED
In the spring prior to departure, enrolled students will be scheduled for
a consultation with the Director of University Guidance and will also receive a comprehensive University Placement package from NJC. Students will be encouraged—as most Grade 11 students are—to conduct preliminary research to narrow their university and program choices. Since no amount of research can replace how a campus feels, NJC also suggests that students visit preferred universities pre-departure for NJC to get a personal sense of the university communities.
SAT Supplementary Test Centre
It is common for there to be a group of NJC students who are vying for a place at a US university. To facilitate the required SAT testing, NJC is a College-Board approved test centre and offers the SAT for the November and December test dates. Any student who is planning to apply to US colleges is strongly urged to write a preliminary set of SAT exams and/ or subject tests during the spring prior to attending NJC. There are normally SAT dates available in May and in June. Having results early will help students concentrate their studies over the summer in an effort to improve test scores in the fall.
The ACT exams are available in Switzerland in neighbouring centres. The ACT has an additional required science section that does not appear on the SAT by comparison, favouring students who plan on studying in the science faculties at the university level. There are also no subject tests with the ACT, but students are encouraged to register for the extra writing section. It is often advisable for students to write both the SAT and ACT to see which test style suits them better initially. The ACT is available globally in the spring, normally in April and in June.
Students seeking assistance in preparing for the SAT or ACT have many options available. From individual study guides, to organized classes and online support, students are encouraged to choose the options that best suit their learning style. It is highly recommended that prep courses be taken prior to departure for NJC. If you have questions about SAT or ACT, please contact the Director of Admission.
Guidance Services
The Director of University Guidance provides careful attention to the needs of each individual student. Traditional guidance services are also available to students in the following areas.
Academic Counselling | Course selection, study skills, time management.
• Psychological Educational Assessments
Students with identified learning disabilities should have a recent Psycho-Educational assessment that has been completed within the past three years. NJC will review the recommended accommodations and provide what is possible in NJC’s setting with the available
