The Consultant Guide
Introduction from Dr Clive Kilgallen, Chair IMO Consultant Committee
Dear Doctor
On behalf of myself and my colleagues on the Consultant
Committee of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO), I am very
pleased to be able to present to you the IMO Consultant Guide
(2021).
You do not need me to tell you just how challenging and difficult
this past year has been for ourselves, the services that we
provide, most importantly of all, our patients.
While it has seemed that the COVID -19 pandemic has crowded
out all other issues, this, of course, has not been the case.
Across a wide range of issues, Consultant members have
continued to avail of the expert industrial relations advice
provided by the IMO, and in particular our Member Advisory
Team.
Individual Consultant members have continued to need advice from the IMO on their rights and
entitlements. Some members have also required representation – either remotely or in person – in
meetings, either with management or with the various third-party bodies.
The purpose of this guide is to advise our Consultant members as to their rights and entitlements in
the workplace. The topics covered range from contract types to working hours and from rest days to
annual leave. It is our hope that providing members with this information, will ensure that all of our
Consultants members avail of their full entitlements, many of which were hard won.
We have also included a section from IMO Financial Services which will answer many of the queries
that IMO Financial Services receive from Consultants regarding their pensions. This is vital
information, no matter what stage of your career you are at.
I hope that you find this guide interesting and informative and would like to thank you for your
support of the IMO, your union.
The contents of this book are accurate as of March 2021.
